Archaeological excavation in advance of development identified elements of the original natural landscape of sand dunes and hollows, together with limited activity in the Late Iron Age period. Identified features consisted of a widespread scatter of miscellaneous pits and postholes and a series of parallel ditches, generally thought to relate to the Late Iron Age/Early Roman field systems which have been seen previously in the vicinity. Highfield Nursery

Archaeological monitoring of the reduced level strip over the footprint of an extension to the existing buildings identified a single Roman feature, a small pit. A trial trench evaluation was carried out at the above site in advance of commercial development. Fifty-two trenches were excavated, covering just over 4% of the site. Very few archaeological features were recorded: just 15 linear features and four pits. Of these nine produced dateable finds and only three of these were earlier than post-medieval in date.
