Summary

Excavations at Eldohouse Farm suggested that there has been an unbroken period of occupation on the site since the 12th century and that a succession of large dwellings have stood on the site of the Eldohouse farmhouse from the late 13th/early 14th century. Documentary material strongly implies that this was the site of one of the Granges belonging to the Abbey and whilst the archaeological evidence could not confirm this, there were indications that the site was a local agricultural centre, and the magnitude and quality of some of the building work demonstrated the high levels of craftsmanship worthy of church masons.
