An archaeological assessment excavation was undertaken in advance of the proposed development of land behind Risbygate Street by St Edmundsbury Borough Council. The site is located outside the medieval town walls but lies within the backyard area of known medieval merchant and dwelling houses.
This evaluation demonstrated surviving medieval archaeology behind no. 90 Risbygate Street which probably represents domestic rubbish pits consistent with the backyards of medieval dwellings. The well uncovered in this area may also be medieval. Potential medieval occupation layers were discovered in the trenches behind nos. 93, 94 and 96 and a possible medieval wall footing behind no. 94. The lower area around trenches 1 and 2 appears entirely destroyed.
